Pets at Risk

Feral Cats Can Attack Pet Cats

Feral or stray cats can enter a private property and attack any unprotected pets, including pet cats, birds, reptiles, marsupials etc.

In the case of pet cats, the pet can sometimes be raped.

The feral cat can introduce Toxoplasma to the property, causing possible infection in pet cats and humans.

At all times, pets should be protected from interaction with or attack from feral or stray cats.

Kangaroo Island has special rules for the protection of pet cats. The four main considerations are:

Feral Cat
  • The pet cat must be desexed (unless the owner has breeder registration for the cat)
  • It must be microchipped
  • It must be registered with the Kangaroo Island Council
  • It must be under effective control at all times
