Past Achievements and Our Plans for the Future

Our main achievement to date has been to have considerable input into Kangaroo Island Council's new Dog and Cat Management Plan. This provides excellent protection for pet cats and owned cats such as farm cats.

Now that this protection is in place we can pursue methods for reducing the problems caused by the feral cat population.

Although trapping and shooting of feral cats is being carried out by various individuals on Kangaroo Island, the Kangaroo Island Cat Control Committee does not believe this will provide an island-wide solution. It can be effective in reducing cat problems in the areas in which the trapping takes place, but must be sustained indefinitely as there is leakage of new cats from the fringes into the target areas.

At this point in time the only possible solution on the horizon is a humane, cat-specific toxin. It has not yet been developed for delivery in the field, but does show promise. Read more about this felid specific toxin here.
