Felid Specific Toxin

A humane and species-specific poison baiting technique for feral cat control

A compound, known as Felid-Specific Toxicant number 2 (FST-2), was identified as a potent and target-specific means of inducing rapid methaemoglobinemia in the cat.

Haemoglobin and Enzymatic Differences

Cats are deficient in two key enzymes present in other species that either protect against this condition or convert haemoglobin back to its functional form.

Haemoglobin and Enzymatic Differences

Cats have been shown to be significantly more susceptible to this compound than other species of mammals and birds. Cats are at least 30 times more sensitive than the most susceptible non-target animal in this graph:

Specificity Chart

This project has delivered two major achievements. A highly cat-specific and humane toxicant formulation has been developed. Secondly, by exploiting differences in the feeding behaviour between feral cats and native mammals a simple, yet pragmatic technique has been developed that will greatly reduce or eliminate non-target exposure to the toxicant.
