Possums constitute the largest percentage of non-target species caught in cat traps. Other species include examples from both avian and ratus-ratus, and very rarely, goannas.
Possums are endemic on Kangaroo Island, and their re-location is conta-indicated. Re-located possums have as many problems of settling into a new area as we do, and offer mostly fatal consequences on account. Secondly, the location from which they are removed is quickly filled with a new possum.
It has become our policy to release all non-target species at the place of entrapment, hoping that they will have learned to stay away from traps in future.
