The goanna can be a non-target species, caught and released
This is a Rosenberg's goanna, easily killed by feral cats, and sometimes, a non-target species which is trapped.
We use the humane pedal release trap (no hooks), and this goanna was not injured. It was easily released, and wondered off slowly, back to its bushy retreat.
The trap had been set in exactly the same place as a feral cat was caught 2 months previously.
Catching non-target species is an unavoidable consequence of any feral cat trapping programme. As traps are set in recessed bushy spots, exposure to elements is minimised, and traps re checked each morning. All non-target species are released where trapped
This one wandered off warily but without any aggression towards us.
